NIT placements 2025: median salary and share of graduates placed, from official NIRF data
Median salary, graduates placed and students going for higher studies at 22 NITs, read from each institute's own NIRF 2025 PDF for the 2023-24 batch, with the share placed worked out.

Placement pages often quote the best package or a "100% placed" line. NIRF asks for something plainer: how many graduated, how many were placed, and the median salary of those placed. This article puts those numbers for every ranked NIT in one table and links each to its NIRF PDF. All facts are from NIRF 2025, graduating batch 2023-24, read on 23 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Data source: each NIT's own NIRF 2025 data PDF, table "Placement & higher studies for previous 3 years", row for graduating year 2023-24, UG 4-year programme. See the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking page.
- Share placed here means students placed divided by students graduating. That division is our arithmetic, not a NIRF figure. Students who went to higher studies stay in the denominator.
- Median salary is the median of the placed graduates only, in rupees a year.
- Medians range from ₹7 lakh to ₹15.9 lakh. NIT Patna and NIT Puducherry report ₹7 lakh; seven of the 22 NITs report below ₹10 lakh.
- NIRF 2026 was not listed on nirfindia.org on 23 October 2026, so 2025 is the latest official edition.

NIT placements 2025: median salary and share placed, institute by institute
Twenty-two NITs are ranked in the top 100 of the NIRF 2025 Engineering page. The table follows NIRF rank. Graduating, placed, higher studies and median are copied from each institute's NIRF PDF; share placed is our division (placed ÷ graduating).

Institutes with a page on CareerBox are linked; the NIRF PDFs are listed under "Official sources". NIT Delhi, NIT Srinagar and IIEST Shibpur do not have a CareerBox page yet. IIEST Shibpur (NIRF rank 54) is not an NIT by name; its row: 617 graduating, 530 placed (85.90%), 78 in higher studies, median ₹8.5 lakh.

Which NIT has the highest median salary?
NIT Delhi reports ₹15.9 lakh, the highest of the 22, but from only 161 graduates (134 placed). Among the larger campuses, NIT Rourkela reports ₹15.25 lakh with 821 of 1,011 graduates placed (81.21%), and NIT Tiruchirappalli ₹14.35 lakh with 791 of 1,029 placed (76.87%). NIT Warangal reports ₹14.2 lakh and NIT Karnataka, Surathkal ₹14 lakh.
At the other end, NIT Patna and NIT Puducherry report ₹7 lakh, and NIT Jalandhar ₹7.94 lakh. For Gujarat students, SVNIT Surat reports a median of ₹9.68 lakh, with 596 of 808 graduates placed (73.76%) and 35 in higher studies.
A median is the middle value: at NIT Rourkela, half of the 821 placed graduates earn more than ₹15.25 lakh and half less. It says nothing about headline packages.
Which NIT places the highest share of its graduates?
NIT Jamshedpur: 701 of 740 graduates placed (94.73%), with a median of ₹10.8 lakh. Next are MNNIT Allahabad at 92.19% (968 of 1,050), MANIT Bhopal at 89.62% and NIT Calicut at 88.58%.
The lowest shares are NIT Kurukshetra (53.64%), NIT Srinagar (57.92%) and NIT Silchar (63.18%). Kurukshetra and Srinagar have large higher-studies numbers (266 and 244). Silchar does not: only 39 of its 823 graduates went to higher studies, so its gap is graduates the table does not count as placed.
Why "share placed" is not the "100% placement" you see elsewhere
Three plain reasons, all visible in the NIRF table itself.
1. Higher studies are counted as graduates. NIRF asks each institute for the number of students graduating, the number placed, and the number selected for higher studies. A student who joins an M.Tech, an MS abroad or a PhD is a graduate but not "placed". If you divide placed by graduating, that student lowers the share.
2. A "100% placed" line can use a smaller base. If you remove the higher-studies students from the denominator, the share rises. This is our arithmetic, not a NIRF figure:
| Institute | Graduating | Higher studies | Placed | Placed ÷ graduating | Placed ÷ (graduating minus higher studies) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Jamshedpur | 740 | 39 | 701 | 94.73% | 100.0% |
| NIT Durgapur | 810 | 244 | 566 | 69.88% | 100.0% |
| MNNIT Allahabad | 1,050 | 36 | 968 | 92.19% | 95.5% |
| NIT Srinagar | 713 | 244 | 413 | 57.92% | 88.1% |
| NIT Kurukshetra | 1,100 | 266 | 590 | 53.64% | 70.7% |
At NIT Jamshedpur and NIT Durgapur, every graduate who did not go for higher studies was placed. That is how a "100% placed" line can be true on its own terms and still sit beside a 69.88% share (Durgapur) in the NIRF table. NIT Kurukshetra shows the opposite: even after removing the 266 higher-studies students, 70.7% of the rest were placed.
3. NIRF counts graduates, not the admitted batch. The count is of students who graduated in the minimum stipulated time, for the 4-year programme. Students who took longer, and students admitted but not graduated, are outside it. A figure built on some other base, such as students who registered for placement, will not match the NIRF share.
Neither figure is wrong. For a parent asking "what happens to a graduate here", the NIRF share, together with the higher-studies column, is the more complete answer.
NITs vs IITs: how the NIRF numbers compare
We read the same table for the IITs. In our IIT placements article, the 15 IITs in the NIRF 2025 top 30 graduated 10,354 students, with 76.66% placed and 16.84% in higher studies, and medians from ₹12 lakh to ₹22.5 lakh.
| Group (NIRF 2025, batch 2023-24) | Graduating | Placed | Higher studies | Median range (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 IITs in the top 30 | 10,354 | 7,937 (76.66%) | 1,744 (16.84%) | 12 to 22.5 |
| 22 NITs on the Engineering page | 17,441 | 13,283 (76.16%) | 2,025 (11.61%) | 7 to 15.9 |
Two things stand out. The share placed is almost the same, 76.66% against 76.16%. The medians are not: the highest NIT median (₹15.9 lakh) is below the middle of the IIT range, though seven NITs report ₹12 lakh or more, which is where two of those 15 IITs sit (IIT Dhanbad and IIT Jodhpur, ₹12 lakh).
The two groups are different sizes and were picked differently (a rank cut-off for IITs, all ranked NITs here). This is not a ranking of NITs against IITs.
NITs listed only in the rank bands
NIRF 2025 does not give ranks below 100 for Engineering. It lists institutes in bands instead. Nine NITs appear there:
- Rank-band 101 to 150: NIT Agartala, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Goa, NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland (page)
- Rank-band 151 to 200: NIT Manipur, NIT Sikkim, NIT Uttarakhand (page)
- Rank-band 201 to 300: NIT Andhra Pradesh (page)
The band pages list only the institute name, city and state. They do not link a data PDF, so we have no placement figures for these nine and have not estimated any.
How to read the NIRF table yourself
- Open the NIRF 2025 Engineering ranking page and click the institute's "More Details" link to get its data PDF.
- Scroll to "Placement & Higher Studies" and find the heading "UG [4 Years Program(s)]: Placement & higher studies for previous 3 years".
- Pick the row whose graduating year is 2023-24. The admission year printed in the first column belongs to the batch that joined four years earlier (2020-21).
- Read four columns: students graduating in minimum stipulated time, students placed, median salary of placed graduates per annum (in rupees), and students selected for higher studies.
- Divide placed by graduating. Then add placed and higher studies to see how much of the batch is accounted for.

What these figures do not tell you
- They are submitted by the institutes. NIRF publishes the data each institute provides in its own PDF. We did not audit them.
- One batch only. This is graduating year 2023-24. The same PDFs carry 2021-22 and 2022-23, and a single year can swing, especially at small campuses such as NIT Delhi (161 graduates) and NIT Meghalaya (140).
- No branch split. A single median covers every branch. NIRF does not split this table by branch, so we cannot give branch-wise figures from it.
- Median is not average, and not the top offer. It also covers only placed graduates.
- Not a ranking by placement. Do not choose between two NITs on one column. Look at share placed, higher studies and median together, then at the branch you can actually get.
If you are still deciding on admission, our JEE Main 2027 guide covers the exam side, and the IIT placements article has the matching table for IITs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average package at NITs in NIRF 2025?
NIRF reports the median, not the average, of placed graduates. For the 22 NITs on the Engineering page it ranges from ₹7 lakh (NIT Patna, NIT Puducherry) to ₹15.9 lakh (NIT Delhi) a year for the 2023-24 batch.
Which NIT has the best placements?
On NIRF 2025 numbers there is no single winner. NIT Delhi has the highest median (₹15.9 lakh) but a batch of only 161. NIT Rourkela is next on median (₹15.25 lakh) with 81.21% placed. NIT Jamshedpur has the highest share placed (94.73%) with a ₹10.8 lakh median. Read share placed, higher studies and median together.
What is the placement percentage of SVNIT Surat?
596 of 808 graduates were placed (73.76%) and 35 went to higher studies, in the 2023-24 batch. The median salary is ₹9.68 lakh a year. The share is our calculation from the NIRF 2025 PDF.
Why is the placement percentage below 100% at NIT Kurukshetra?
Because the share placed divides by all graduates. At NIT Kurukshetra, 590 of 1,100 graduates were placed (53.64%) and 266 went to higher studies. The remaining 244 are not counted as placed or in higher studies in the table.
Are NITs better than IITs for placements?
The NIRF numbers do not say that. The share placed is close (76.16% for the 22 NITs, 76.66% for the 15 IITs in the top 30), and IIT medians are higher. See the IIT table before comparing, and compare the branch you can get, not the label.
Which batch do these numbers cover?
Graduating year 2023-24, as submitted for NIRF 2025. NIRF 2026 was not published on nirfindia.org as of 23 October 2026.
Do the figures include M.Tech and PhD students?
No. We used the UG 4-year programme row only.
