Post Office Recruitment 2026: India Post GDS vacancies, Gujarat circle, eligibility, salary and merit list
India Post GDS Schedule-II July 2026: 23,757 posts, 499 in Gujarat, applications closed 21 September 2026, Class 10 merit list, no exam, TRCA pay and what to do after shortlisting.

People search "post office recruitment 2026" and find a dozen pages quoting dates from older years. This guide uses only the Department of Posts' own documents, read on 22 October 2026: the GDS Online Engagement portal, the Schedule-II notification PDF, the circle-wise post table and the India Post vacancies page.
Key takeaways
- The notification: No. 17-12/2026-GDS dated 20 August 2026, "Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) Online Engagement Schedule-II, July-2026".
- Posts: 23,757 across the country, in 36 circle and language rows. Gujarat Circle: 499.
- Last date to apply: 21 September 2026, 5 pm. Correction window: 23 and 24 September 2026. Both are over.
- Who can apply: Class 10 pass with passing marks in Mathematics and English, local language studied up to Class 10, age 18 to 40 (relaxations apply).
- Fee: ₹100, but nothing for women, SC, ST, PwBD and transwomen applicants.
- Selection: a system-generated merit list from Class 10 marks, then document verification. There is no written test.
- Pay: TRCA of ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 for Branch Postmasters and ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 for ABPM and Dak Sevaks, plus dearness allowance.

What is official for 2026, and what is not
Official for 2026:
- The Schedule-II, July-2026 notification above, with dates, rules, fee and the circle-wise post table.
- A banner on the portal: "GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July-2026: List-I of Shortlisted Candidates Published".
- Three other India Post notices on the vacancies page, none of them for GDS: Drivers (Ordinary Grade) on deputation or absorption, dated 1 August 2026; Skilled Artisan (Ordinary Grade) at Mail Motor Service, Bengaluru, dated 16 June 2026 with a corrigendum on 29 June 2026; and Manager, Mail Motor Service, direct recruitment, dated 5 June 2026. I read these titles and dates, not the PDFs, so check them yourself if you are eligible.
Not 2026, so do not rely on it:
- The older portal indiapostgdsonline.gov.in still lists shortlists for Schedule-I, January 2025 (six lists per circle, Gujarat included). That is a past cycle.
- Registration numbers from earlier schedules. The 2026 notification says Schedule-II candidates "are required to register afresh".
Not found: a Schedule-III or any new GDS notification. On 22 October 2026 the portal shows only Schedule-II as active. The dates for the next round are not announced, so any page promising "India Post GDS 2027 notification date" is guessing.
Also be careful with scams. The India Post homepage carries a fraud alert against links impersonating it, and the GDS portal says the department writes only from email IDs ending @indiapost.gov.in or @indiapostgdsonline.gov.in. The notification adds that the department does not phone applicants.

Posts: BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak
The notification fills "Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDSs) [i.e. Branch Postmaster (BPM)/Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)/Dak Sevaks]".
- Branch Postmaster (BPM): runs the Branch Post Office, including India Post Payments Bank work, mail conveyance and delivery in single-handed offices. A BPM must provide accommodation for the post office at their own cost and live in the post village.
- Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): sells stamps, delivers mail at the doorstep, handles bank transactions and helps the BPM. Lives within the office's delivery area.
- Dak Sevak: works in post offices, sorting offices, mail offices and delivery centres, handling mail, bags and parcels.
One point many applicants miss: GDS are not regular central government employees. The notification says their "emoluments, allowances and other entitlements are not at par with the Central Government employees", that they work a minimum of four and a maximum of five hours a day, and that a Sevak "should have another source of income" for the family's livelihood. They cannot continue after 65.
How many vacancies, and Gujarat circle numbers
The circle-wise table (Annexure-Ia) totals 23,757 posts. The largest rows are Maharashtra (Marathi, 2,297), Tamil Nadu (2,118) and Uttar Pradesh (1,691). The figures are marked tentative in the notification, and division-wise detail sits on the portal.
Gujarat Circle: 499 posts, with Gujarati as the language. The circle covers Gujarat, Dadra Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu.
| Gujarat Circle category | Posts |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 234 |
| OBC | 118 |
| SC | 24 |
| ST | 74 |
| EWS | 38 |
| PwBD (all four sub-categories) | 11 |
| Total | 499 |
Eligibility: age, Class 10 marks, language and cycling
Age: 18 to 40 years on the last date for applications. Upper-age relaxation: 5 years for SC and ST, 3 years for OBC, 10 years for PwBD, 13 years for PwBD plus OBC and 15 years for PwBD plus SC or ST. EWS gets no age relaxation but has 10% reservation.
Education: a Secondary School Examination (Class 10) pass certificate with passing marks in Mathematics and English from a recognised board of the Central or a state or UT government. The notification says candidates with an equivalent qualification from any other board are not eligible.
Local language: you must have studied the local language at least up to Class 10. For Gujarat Circle that is Gujarati. Goa, Sikkim, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have special language rules in the notification.
Other conditions: knowledge of computers, knowledge of cycling and adequate means of livelihood. You sign undertakings for these at the time of engagement.
Not allowed: anyone dismissed, removed or compulsorily retired from government service or as a GDS, and anyone holding an elective office.
Application fee for the post office GDS form
The fee is ₹100 for all posts in the division you choose. The notification exempts all female applicants, SC and ST applicants, PwBD and transwomen applicants. Fee once paid is not refunded, and a payment after the closing time is not refunded either.
You apply to one division and give a preference order of the posts shown for it. If the merit list puts you in more than one, you are offered only the first post in your order.
Selection: how the GDS merit list is made
There is no written exam and no interview. The notification says applicants are shortlisted "on the basis of a system-generated merit list", prepared from marks in the Class 10 Secondary School Examination, aggregated to a percentage "to the accuracy of 4 decimals".
- If your marksheet has only grades, the system multiplies the grade point or CGPA by 9.5. If it has both marks and grades, marks are used.
- Where a board gives both percentage and grade points, as Delhi's does, the percentage is used.
- Ties are broken by date of birth (older candidate first), then by a priority order that runs from ST transwoman and ST female through to UR male.
- Applications with wrong data, blurred photographs or signatures, or unnecessary documents are rejected.
You uploaded no certificates at the time of applying. The only uploads were a recent photograph (JPG, 30 KB to 100 KB) and a signature.
India Post GDS salary
Pay is a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA). The initial slabs in the notification:
| Post | TRCA slab (basic, per month) |
|---|---|
| Branch Postmaster (BPM) | ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 |
| ABPM and Dak Sevak | ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 |
TRCA rises by 3% a year, subject to the GDS Rules, and dearness allowance is added as the Government of India declares it. GDS also get a gratuity and a Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, which the notification compares to the National Pension System. It gives slabs, not one in-hand figure.
What to do now if you applied
Open the portal, choose the circle-wise "List of Shortlisted Candidates" and look for your registration number. Then:
- Document verification within 15 days of shortlisting. Go to the Divisional or Unit Head who owns your post. Miss it and the system marks you "Non-turned up" and cancels the candidature.
- Carry originals plus two sets of self-attested copies: marksheet, identity proof, date of birth proof, caste, PwBD, EWS or transgender certificates if you claim them, and a medical certificate from a government hospital or dispensary. The medical certificate is compulsory.
- Offer of provisional engagement is issued when verification succeeds.
- Join within 30 days. That includes 3 days of basic training and, for BPMs, arranging accommodation.
- Final order follows police and issuing-authority verification.
Keep a DigiLocker account with your Class 10 marksheet fetched: the department may check it through API Setu, and a mismatch with what you entered means rejection.

If you missed it: other 10th pass government jobs open now
Class 10 is also the entry point for some other posts we have covered from official notices. The Supreme Court is recruiting Junior Court Attendants for Class 10 and Class 12 pass candidates: apply from 4 to 25 November. ISRO's Sriharikota spaceport has posts for Class 10 candidates too: apply by 9 November. Class 12 pass candidates can look at RRB NTPC 2026.
